I have the same problem when I forget to turn the printer on BEFORE
booting FreeBSD.  The following works for me:

1.  Issue command:  shutdown -h now

2.  Wait for disk sync message.

3.  Hard system reset and/or toggle power on/off.  (Ctrl-Alt-Del won't
help.)

4.  Make sure printer is ON and ON-LINE

5.  Boot FreeBSD

I hope this works for you.
