I had the same problem with precompied screen. I ended up ftp'ing the source from prep.ai.mit.edu, and I changed around a bunch of settings in the config header (Unfortunately, I don't remember all I did.. the only thing I remembered was that I said not to use named pipes.) I installed it as setuid root (the default), and replaced FreeBSD's termcap's screen and SC entries with the ones that the screen package told me to use, and it works as it's supposed to. I don't have much to do tonight, I should get the sources again and see exactly what I did because I remember hearing many people having problems with the default screen package too. Rob
