As an educated guess, I'd suggest that you have the IRQ settings wrong
for your card. I had the same problem with my "integrated" Soundblaster
16, and fixed it by configuring the kernel to use IRQ 5 instead of the default,
IRQ 7. The sound is still pretty rough though, suffering from a great deal
of background noise, even when a sample isn't playing. Is this normal?

I personally am having difficulties getting the MIDI and FM stuff working,
partly due to the nature of my machine with its "integrated" sound stuff
and partly due to my ignorance of PC hardware. I also cannot get my ATAPI
CD-ROM working :-(. The machine is a Viglen Genie PCI Professional P5/75 - 
has anyone had any luck with this config.?
