NetBSD is *slightly* less polished and its design goals focus more upon creating a system that is geared more towards cross-platform interoperability (one NetBSD for SPARC, i386, hp300, and a load of others). I, myself, used to be an avid Linux user who is now a zealous BSD advocate. As for your problem with the boot disk, the kernels (and, as a result lkms) are not compatible between NetBSD and FreeBSD. -- Jon "JaMah!" H.
