Suggest you not use cpio. :-)

Increment the block size for dump (the `b' option), e.g. to 16
(kilobytes).

As long as you can live with the limitation of backing up entire
partitions at once, dump(8) is most likely more interesting for backup
purposes.  (Programs like tar(1) or cpio(1) do also have their merits,
but backing up and restoring large file systems do not belong to it.)
