Almost *every* PPP implementation used today by ISP's support Predictor-1 compression, although it appear Linux doesn't. Get your ISP to update the PPP implementation they use to something more modern, since using compression significantly increases throughput. Also, the way PPP is setup, if a implementation doesn't support compression, it should be telling your client that it's unsupported, and not fake it which causes the link to fail. The bottom line is that your ISP's PPP implementation isn't just old, it's also buggy.
