Yes, but this is really a seperate question. I'm sure that both Linux and
FreeBSD do fine on an unloaded server -- they are both reliable operating
systems at this point. The worries I have are what happens when the machine
is loaded down with silly CGI programs and serving out T1's worth of data. We
are using SunOS now, and I know for a fact that it _flails_ once the load on
the machine becomes significant - it just doesn't take any new connections.

So what's going to happen when the server is getting pummeled? Is the Linux
tcp/ip handling weak under load, or is this something that has been fixed
   years ago?

I can't speak from personal experience WRT Linux (but can WRT NetBSD),
so take this with a grain of salt or two. But, according to your
paragraph above, and from many testimonials I've heard from current
and former Linux users, you will regret choosing Linux quickly if you
try to make it do what you're asking...

However, let your own experience be the guide. Try NetBSD or FreeBSD
first. If you don't like it, switch back to Linux. If you really
don't like that, switch to the other BSD. I'm sure one of them will
do the trick.
