So the drive stops and must backup in preperation for the >next lot of data it receives. Are you using the verify option? My tape will stream fine unless I have tar do a verify. With the verify option enabled the tape does keep backing up to verify each directory. I am using a SCSI tape drive. FreeBSD seems to have no problem feeding data to the tape.
