Summary: Modem "hangs" - unable to dial in again
Keywords: modem getty slip login hang ttyd0

Hi All, hope someone can assist me.

We have a single modem installed on out FreeBSD box (2.0.1)
- a Us-Robotics 14.4. We have recently been having hassles using
slip over this line - when logging off (hanging up from the remote
end), the modem "hangs" and the line remains "off-hook" so we are unable
to log in again.

Looking at the processes running, there is always a getty running
on the modem device (ttyd0) - presumably this is causing the
line to be considered "in use" and the modem to be off hook.

However, this getty will not respond to a kill or kill -9, and
the only way to clear the line seems to be a shutdown/reboot.

Should I be using the "to" parameter in /etc/gettytab
(to = timeout of some sort)? If not, what could my hassle be?

This is quite urgent, as the line is used for work, and it's a
darn nuisance :)

All help *really* appreciated,

	-Ewan
