Some nomenclature. -stable == 2.1 release candidate. -current == 2.2 release candidate. Obviously, with the 2.1 release imminent, -stable is almost *exactly* the same as what will be in 2.1R. However, -current will change radically from now until 2.2 is released. Also, -current is used to add new and sometimes experimental changes such as ext2fs, radical changes to the VM system, and other new and exciting changes. Because of this the tree is sometimes un-compilable, the kernel is at times unstable, but this is supposed to be kept to a minimum. That's the long answer. The short answer is that the ext2fs code is in 2.2 because it's experimental and *might* be unstable. Since 2.1R is the -stable branch, code as green as the ext2fs port would not be added to this branch.
