Well, actually, the netmask 0xffffffff is *only* necessary when you're
assigning multiple IP addresses out of the same (sub)net to your
interface!

If you're going to assign an alias for a different subnet, use
whatever netmask is appropriate then.  This allows for different
subnets on the same wire.
