You should ftp the latest version of the boot.flp and fixit.flp images.
The ones from the latest SNAP at ftp.cdrom.com has just this functionality.
Tar is not one of the utilities on the fixit floppy, but you can use cpio
to read tar tapes (thanks Jordan).
