I've got my eyes on a portable computer (Pentium-based). Has anyone
had success installing one of the IBM-compatible UNIXes on a
   portable (Linux,netBSD,BSDI,freeBSD,etc)? The newest portables
seem to be based on the PCMCIA bus and from what I've read in
the web pages, this bus is not supported. I'm also worried
about the internal CD-ROM drives portables come with.

I'm running Linux on a Sunrace notebook and have just completed an
installation on a Toshiba T2450CT. There is no problem with PCMCIA
support, you can get pcmcia drivers from tsx-11.mit.edu, the latest
release is 2.7.5 which now also supports the 1.3.x kernels. I'm
running a 3Com 3C589B ethernet and an Intel International Fax Modem
card and both work fine.

There is also support for IDE and ATAPI CD-ROM drives, but I have no
experience with those.

Regards,
Chris
