Actually, IDE isn't an optimal technology for UNIX. What I got was the dealer saying "Unix in general doesn't work properly with IDE" meant non-optimal. Apparently you got "doesn't work at all" out of it. If the dealer meant what I thought he meant, marry him! He is your dealer-for-life! Most dealers simply sell what they can get the highest margin on, and that he was even comfortable enough with the idea to mention it means he is probably more than a suit full of marketing literature, which puts him light years ahead of many dealers I've known! I personally wouldn't buy an IDE because of geometry translation, and there's one Maxtor SCSI drive, so far, in the same boat. I like the UFS caching and optimization to actually result in a speedup, and it can't on a geometry translated drive (see my other tirade 8-)).
