I had trouble with this too. I ran the dos "3c5x9cfg" utility and set up one card as 300h i/o 10 irq Disabled On board coax (BNC) Server 9600 Baud Enabled then cycled power and it worked. I didn't touch the kernel configuration. I too have a second card, but am waiting on cables to be installed before trying it out.
