It could be a motherboard problem.  I've heard from a number of sources
that 486/PCI boards tend to have an inordinate amount of problems.  I
haven't had any trouble on 486/80/100/120mhz boards using Buslogic
445 (VLB) scsi boards.  Also, the 2940 is known to work well with
FreeBSD (I believe that's what ftp.cdrom.com is using).
