It should work.

Yes.

By default, i you do not set the /etc/sysconfig's parameter gateway to YES,
the kernel will not forward packets.

Look at the sysctl variable named net.inet.ip.forwarding, it is set to 0 by
default. 

sysctl net.inet.ip.forwarding

to display the value.
