I have no problems with mine! - but you cannot use MMAP - I have 7 gigs 
of news spool, and I get close to 100 simultaneous nnrps at once.

Maybe you are running out of processes?  I had this problem since 
everything is suid news - you can set max procs and max files to over 128 
each in the sysconfig.h under the /usr/src area and recompile the kernal.

I bet this latter problem is the one you are having - ever been logged in 
and have it start saying "process killed" on you?
