Altho I've been a uNix booster for umpteen years, I'm
relatively new to the cheap or free versions. From
what I've seen of FreeBSD, it is as solid as anything
out there, commercialware or freeware. Hopefully,
Linux and *BSD will merge---at least in part. For now,
both versions are useful. Especially if you are willing
      to get into the code.

As far as drives are concerned, go SCSI. I've got
a SCSI tape, CDROM, and hard drive. Works perfectly.
