From what I've seen of FreeBSD, it is as solid as anything out there, commercialware or freeware. Hopefully, Linux and *BSD will merge---at least in part. For now, both versions are useful. Especially if you are willing to get into the code. As far as drives are concerned, go SCSI. I've got a SCSI tape, CDROM, and hard drive.
