Ooooh, you've got a rather old X server, this was still XFree86 3.1.1.
This became a very well-known problem, and finally urged the
XConsortium to fix the Xaw programs. :-)

Good news for you: by yesterday, XFree86 has been releasing the first
Beta after release 3.1.2 (called 3.1.2A), and they've been changing
their policy in that publically available binary releases are now
possible. (The servers have an expiration date, to prevent them from
lurking around for too long.) The 3.1.2A SVGA server has preliminary
support for the Trident TGUI 9440.
