$ What filesystems does FreeBSD support?
$ Does it support the Linux Second Extended?

it's in freebsd-current; not in any release you can install right now.

$ Does it support OS/2 HPFS?

not in any release you can install right now.

$ What is it's 'native' filesystem type?

ufs or the bsd ffs (fast filesystem).

it also supports msdosfs, nfs, iso9660 (cdroms), mfs (memory fs).
there are a few other 4.4bsd-specific filesystems (kernfs, procfs, portalfs,
etc) that are supported (though not all work very well).

$ I know the anwaser to this is probably know but...
$ Can FreeBSD run Linux binaries (ELF or a.out)?

(most?) linux ZMAGIC a.out executables. it can't do svga stuff.

$ How much space to I need for a FreeBSD installation including compilers and
$ XFree86?

hmm. i'm guessing 100mb.

$ Does FreeBSD have to be on the first partition of the first hard disk?

no.

$ The partition I have open is the second one on the first disk.

i don't know how dos/bioses/boot managers handle that. may work for you.
if all else fails, you should (i think!) be able to boot off a floppy disk
and have it run off that partition.
