You might be better off trying FreeBSD. It's free, like Linux, but
real BSD.
However, if you want to pay for BSDI (which I've also heard is quite
good), I would start by consulting www.bsdi.com.
Finally, you could also try NetBSD, which is also free. However, it
doesn't have the fuzzy-warm hand-holding install -- it's much more
manual and "hands-on".
