i have it too, but a different problem. 
i run /usr/bin/X11/X :/dev/console
and it goes but then it can't make the unix domain socket. 
It makes /tmp/.X11-unix, but then no socket ...
any ideas here? 
i am using the supplied 386bsd kernel that is part of the 1.2E distrib.
