I'm at the point right now where I can start buying the components
for a machine I intend to install 386BSD on. At the same time, I
am getting my sea-legs with SunOS on a machine at work, so I
expect that by the time I actually have some hardware assembled
(next summer), I'll be up to speed, enough for the installation.
In the meantime, I'd appreciate some suggestions for hardware that
is known to be compatible with the 386BSD. Specifically, I will
be putting together a 486-50 or 66/DX2, and I would like for the
bus to be EISA, with a rather large SCSI attached (500M-1Gig).
I'd like for the motherboard to be one of the OPTI/AMI gems that
are so compatible and vanilla with QEMM386 on DOS systems. Is
this even an issue for 386BSD? How about the Mylex and AMI
brands? Generic Taiwanese OPTI/AMI? I read elsewhere in this
group a reference to a 16Mb limit, but couldn't find any other
details. 16M is a good amount to start with, but I would surely
want to go to 32 or 64 later.
I can live with ISA, though, as long as I am able to use the
Adaptec bus mastering 1542 series controllers or equivalent. I
want a fast disk subsystem, preferably cached, if this is
supported.
I intend to install X11 once I get the basic OS up and running, so
the video card is important to me, too. I use an ATI Graphics
Ultra on my DESQview/X box, and it really flies. I'd like to use
the same on the 386BSD machine. I'm open to other cards like the
busmastering QVision from Compaq, if there is/will be support for
same. There are also some interesting OPTI/AMI motherboards with
32 bit local bus video included, using the Tseng 4000.
Tape support is a concern, too, but I do not need a huge DAT right
off the bat. I don't mind swapping tapes. I just want it to work
without too much hassle, and keep the costs down.
What's a good serial port board for 386BSD? At some point, I will
want to open up some public dialins for news/uucp.
Ethernet cards: I know what works well with DOS systems - what
works well with 386BSD? The DV/X box, and the 386BSD box will,
naturally, be networked. I may even yank out the video card from
the DV/X box, and just use it as a DOS process server, with the
display always on the 386BSD machine.
E-mail tips, or public response is fine.
