That's because the CDU-535 doesn't use Sony's proprietary interface, but instead the (somewhat less proprietary) EIDE interface. There is some 'alpha' support for EIDE CD-ROM's available in the eide boot floppy, but I have no experience with it so I can't tell you how to use it.
