Have you defined contents for the file /etc/resolv.conf ?

It should contain your domain name and the name of your "nameserver",
which is the machine you designate to resolve your internet destination
names - like "ftp.netbsd.org" for example. Your "nameserver" "resolves"
that name for you, into an ip-address.

I list as my nameserver my internet provider's main host name in my
/etc/resolve.conf file.
