well, the 16-bit 3c509 is not the best choice. A 32bit PCI card is
MUCH, MUCH better. These days, the price difference is not much,
and can run the 100Mbps speed when you're ready to move up.

Stay away from ISA cards for SCSI/ethernet subsystems in ANY
server-class machine. Regardless of the OS.

You want 32bit busmastering PCI cards. Hope there are drivers for
FreeBSD.
