Peter, This problem is actually a sometimes useful feature of XFree86, the virtual screen. To keep it from happening, look in your /etc/XF86Config or /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config.<host> file for the line regarding the virtual screen (in the section about resolution modes, etc.), and set it to the same size as your usual screen.
