:My question is this: If I get a new computer with a nice big empty hard

:1. Make a boot floppy at home on my Linux box which is connected to the
:net.
:2. Connect the computer via the ethernet card to the office ethernet
:which is connected to the net.
:3. Boot the new, OS-less computer from the floppy.
:4. Complete the installation via FTP.

exactly
you don't have to FTP anything manually, other than the initial floppy.
the install knows where to get everything and will..

Because the primary site is so busy, make sure you
set FTP retries to YES in the 'options' screen.
(because sometimes it has a tough time getting into the site
when it's full)

:Basically I don't want to have to FTP a bunch of stuff on to my Linux
:box and then put it on floppies to transfer to the BSD box. But I'm also
:hoping I can save money by not buying a CD-ROM drive I don't otherwise
:need just to install the system from it.

Also exactly correct.. that's how I've installed all my
386BSD and FreeBSD boxes ..
give me a call if you have problems..
looks like you're local..
