Licensed? Yup. That's necessary in today's legal environment if you're in the commercial market. Expensive? I don't think so. It's probably beyond the average hobbyist's budget, but that isn't the market they're trying to compete in. Well, considering the volume of business that we (Cygnus) happen to be doing, I don't think that licensed software that is non-redistributable is a requirement for the market today. And Cygnus isn't the only company doing this. I can name several others as well. Crynwr, Congruent, and Qualix all have products that are freely redistributable. Free software *is* commercially viable. I manage to pay my rent and buy my groceries and even afford my spare time recreations (which aren't all that cheap at times) all by working on free software.
