Usually you have to recompile the kernel, and make sure "options GATEWAY" is 
in the kernel config file.
It may also be that the gateway feature is part of the loadable kernel 
modules; however, I really don't know anything about the LKM stuff.  I just 
rebuild my kernels...  :)
