OK, I have narrowed things down somewhat.

I set up an entry in /etc/hosts for localhost and can now connect with
rlogin, telnet, and ftp.  What do I do now?  I would like to use a regular
address (such as 0.0.0.1) for my first system, but can't manage to get
it to work.
