They are not automatically found any more, because randomly probing for cards on pre-PnP PC hardware can hang the system, but see http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html As you say, each to his own. I originally chose Linux because it had shared libraries earlier. That's ancient history now, but I'm not going to switch.
