Which SMC card?  Any card based on the DC21x4x series of PCI Ethernet
Controllers will have no onboard buffering other than the "relatively"
small FIFOs on the chip itself.  Instead, the DC21x4x chips DMA directly
to/from host memory which allow as much buffering as one wants.
