Actually, the *kernel* must be before the 1024th cylinder, as that's all
the PC BIOS can see at boot time (once the kernel is loaded, the BIOS
is ignored, so the whole disk is usable). Unfortunately, the kernel
may be anywhere in the partition, hence the problems you describe.

I have successfully used two FreeBSD partitions with 2.1.0-RELEASE (before
I decided to dedicate the whole disk to it). The first one, 20MB in size, 
is located within the first 1024 cylinders and contains the root filesystem. 
The second can be anywhere and have any size you like, and is used for the 
other FreeBSD filesystems (/var, /usr, /home etc).
