That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I looked at an ad for Barnes and Noble in the San Francisco Chronicle (Thursday, December 14, 1995, A27) and I found 2 books for Java. Unfortnately, ISN numbers or author's names weren't included in the ad, so I'll just list the titles: Title: Java! B&N abstract: Discover how to serve, configure, administer and support Java on an Internet server with this detailed guide to the cutting-edge languge. The enclosed CD-ROM contains ready-to-use Java applets. Pub price: $35.00 B&N's price: $28.00 Title: Presenting Java B&N abstract: This quick inroduction to Java's basic concepts and technical details explains how to download, install, and use the HotJava Web browser, and covers the language, it's applets and object-orientated programming in general. Pub price: $25.00 B&N price: $20.00 I've seen plenty of Linux books on the market. Heck, when I go to Barnes and Noble's, there are only slightly more UNIX books then there are Linux books. I think the Linux section takes up more than 3 or 4 shelves. I've never seen a FreeBSD book. And I seriously doubt that 20,000 people are using FreeBSD. Just for reference, the Linux journal has a distribution size of 29,000. (source: Linux Journal, issue 20, Dec 1995, pg 65). If you figure that the number is 5% of the actual number of Linux users, then that would put Linux users at over half a million. Then again, 5% seems really high, so I wouldn't doubt it if there were over a million Linux users. Take care, -- Nick Kralevich nickkral@cory.eecs.berkeley.edu
