Actually, at this point, the GPL hasn't affected the Linux kernel at all.

There aren't any readily available totally incompatible versions of the
Linux kernel out there.  You have kept control of the Linux kernel, and
the main use of the GPL has been to keep CD-ROM distribution compilers
from only shipping binary images.

Linux is Linux, except for kernel rev differences.
