When I decided to start Linux Journal is was a big chance. A few issues into publishing LJ and significantly in the hole financially I thought the chance was bigger than what SSC could afford. But, about a year later, we started to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Today LJ is paying its own bills. That said, for a similar magazine to happen for FreeBSD (and we would be interested in publishing it) we need to see the same sort of support as Linux Journal received. From the beginning we had advertisers that had faith and we had readers that had faith. I think we have proved that SSC can publish magazines (we just started WEBsmith, a magazine for WWW developers) so it should be easier than when we started our first magazine. If you want to see a FreeBSD Journal you need to convince a publisher (we are certainly interested, other publishers may be as well) that FreeBSD has the necessary following to make it happen. As for numbers, we are talking $20,000/issue minimum to even consider it and the revenue needs to quickly get to 2-3 times that number for the magazine to break even. Put another way, 1000 new subscribers each month and 20 pages of advertising is in the ballpark. If you think you can convince me this can happen, go for it. I really would like to see something like this happen but with WEBsmith just starting plus the Orion Firewall system and other Zebu-related projects I don't have the time or ambition to do the research right now. -- Phil Hughes, SSC, Inc.
