I suspect the problem is ghostscript or the hardware you're using. A 386 with 8MB ram is not very well suited for this. OTOH, maybe you're using a colour driver for the Deskjet? (those which start with a 'c') It works but it *really* slows down things. I don't know if the 540 is a colour printer but you should consider switching to the monochrome drivers at least for text output. : I also noticed that it seemed to print faster when the system was under : more load than "just" the print daemon doing its thing.
