I'm going to have to take Paul's word for this. However, this reminds
me greatly of another article which recently annoyed me: in the
October issue of UNIX Magazin - already mentioned here because of
their (IMHO unrealistic) claim that 250,000 copies were already out
there :
from what i can tell the quarter of a million copies is a totally made
up number. as the person who keeps the ftp stats on agate.berkeley.edu,
i know that the jolitz's haven't a clue to how many copies have been
distributed via us. don't get me wrong, ALOT of copies of 386bsd have
been distributed.
in general it's really hard to figure out how many copies one has
extant, cause ftp sites get it from ftp sites, and friends get it
from friends.
probably lynne got the number from the 250,000 people who contributed
'for the kids'.
