Subject: tip ~C command from an xterm window [386BSD/XFree86]?

I call into a remote system via the tip command from within an xterm
window. I initiate a file transfer with tip's ~C command and attempt
to change to a local xterm - effectively putting the transfer in the
background. But as soon as the transfer begins, the mouse cursor is
forced to the bottom of the screen until the transfer is terminated,
i.e.,

local$ xterm &
local$ tip remote-sys
[...]
remote$ sz file
~C
Local Command?
rz
[mouse goes to bottom of screen... can't go to other xterm]

Tip connects the standard i/o to the modem port and stderr during the
~C command. Perhaps writing to stderr is causing the problem? If so,
why? In any case, what can be done about it? How can one initiate
background xfers using tip? Thanks.
