I'm so embarassed. *blush* Yes, it was running as root. The problem is my uid is 2. As another poster mentioned, popper does not allow you to check mail for single digit uid's...I changed my userID to 11 and it works just fine. Thank you thank you thank you thank you! I might have figured that out long ago if the error message told you what the REAL error was instead of "incorrect password" or if I'd read the documentation accompanying the source a lot more carefully.
