: Just paranoia: your POP service runs with an effective UID of 0, right?

I'm so embarassed. *blush* Yes, it was running as root. The
problem is my uid is 2. As another poster mentioned, popper
does not allow you to check mail for single digit uid's...I changed
my userID to 11 and it works just fine. Thank you thank you thank
you thank you!

I might have figured that out long ago if the error message
told you what the REAL error was instead of "incorrect password"
or if I'd read the documentation accompanying the source a lot
more carefully.

Thanks to everyone who sent me email trying to help.
(especially SuperUser on #FreeBSD)

Regards and happy holidays!
