The cancels follow the "<cancel.", "cyberspam!", "bincancel!", and "X-Canceled-By: " conventions. The criteria used to search for this batch of large binaries were: SIZE: > 160,000 characters (to be lowered to 140,000 soon) NEWSGROUPS: Unmoderated biz, comp, misc, rec, sci BINARY: (uuencoded, .uue, .zip, .ps, .gif, .bmp, .tif, .sit etc...) In my opinion, the best way to distribute binary files is via ftp or the web. With the ready availablity of ftpmail servers, even uucp sites can retrieve binaries from ftp sites. However, if you really must post a binary to Usenet please post it to an appropriate binaries newsgroup with a pointer (not a cross-post) in the appropriate discussion group. This will permit news administrators and users to decide for themselves whether to receive the binary files. There has been a long-standing consensus among news administrators that binaries belong in binaries newsgroups, and not elsewhere. There seems to be an emerging consensus supporting the cancellation of large binaries in discussion groups as long as appropriate protocols are followed. I am testing that consenus and developing a protocol. The sizes and headers of the canceled binaries follow: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Size: 168794 characters |Path: ...!newsxfer.itd.umich.edu!news.eecs.umich.edu!quip.eecs.umich.edu!dmuntz |From: dmuntz@quip.eecs.umich.edu (Dan Muntz) |Newsgroups: comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc |Subject: quick and dirty pcmcia modem support for 2.1 |Date: 28 Dec 1995 17:42:43 GMT |Organization: University of Michigan EECS Dept. |Lines: 2720 |Message-ID: <4bukuj$7al@news.eecs.umich.edu> |NNTP-Posting-Host: quip.eecs.umich.edu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Size: 165286 characters |Path: ...!news.kei.com!newsfeed.internetmci.com!newsfeed.direct.ca!usenet |From: anon@anon.penet.ci (Dracko) |Newsgroups: comp.os.os2.utilities |Subject: Veritable zip201 - zip201x2.zip (1/1) |Date: Sun, 31 Dec 1995 05:01:47 GMT |Organization: anon |Lines: 2660 |Message-ID: <4c4u3r$pu4@grid.direct.ca> |Reply-To: noone |NNTP-Posting-Host: 204.174.243.117 |X-Newsreader: Tseng-tseng-tseng 00 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Size: 450151 characters |Path: ...!netcomsv!uu3news.netcom.com!ix.netcom.com!netnews |From: splinter@ix.netcom.com (mark) |Newsgroups: comp.cad.autocad |Subject: test - harley.dwg (1/1) |Date: Tue, 02 Jan 1996 01:41:18 GMT |Organization: Netcom |Lines: 7253 |Message-ID: <4c9o0q$g38@ixnews8.ix.netcom.com> |NNTP-Posting-Host: ix-orl2-04.ix.netcom.com |X-NETCOM-Date: Mon Jan 01 2:42:41 PM PST 1996 |X-Newsreader: Forte Free Agent 1.0.82 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= @@BEGIN NCM HEADERS Version: 0.9 Issuer: red@redpoll.mrfs.oh.us (Richard E.
