We use Buslogic 946 PCI SCSI controllers throughout in our BSDI 2.0.1 machines, and all SCSI-II devices we have connected so far have worked just fine straight off including 8GB DAT drives. May I suggest that assuming your devices are SCSI-II based, you see if you cannot borrow a re-writable optical drive (Panasonic preferred choice IMO) on evaluation and see if it works - it should work just fine - try dump.
