Most of these devices tend to be SCSI-II based and *should* therefore work 
straight off the same SCSI chain as your hard disks, CD-ROM drive etc..without 
the need for any specific drivers.  We use Buslogic 946 PCI SCSI controllers 
throughout in our BSDI 2.0.1 machines, and all SCSI-II devices we have 
connected so far have worked just fine straight off including 8GB DAT drives.

May I suggest that assuming your devices are SCSI-II based, you see if you 
cannot borrow a re-writable optical drive (Panasonic preferred choice IMO) on 
evaluation and see if it works - it should work just fine - try dump.
