Newsgroups: comp.unix.bsd Path: sserve!manuel!munnari.oz.au!sgiblab!darwin.sura.net!europa.asd.contel.com!uunet!super!rminnich From: rminnich@super.org (Ronald G Minnich) Subject: compaq users: new boot disk and tar file of bin01 Message-ID: <1992Sep30.171709.12748@super.org> Sender: news@super.org (USENET News System) Nntp-Posting-Host: metropolis Organization: Supercomputing Research Center (Bowie, MD) Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1992 17:17:09 GMT Lines: 33 Due to a request met.super.org now has the following: 1) fixit disk bootable on compaqs fixit.compaq.ftp 2) compressed tar file of one of my compaq's root and /usr/ partition. 386bsd.0.1.usr-root.tar.Z the fixit disk is minus some standard things, notably cpio, stty. there was not much room. the kernel is stripped too. the idea is: 1) boot this diskette 2) ftp and zcat are on the diskette, as is ifconfig. 3) disklabel and newfs your disk, both a and b (you need it for a minute) 4) mount the disk, both a and b partitions (remember you are still running from floppy) 5) ifconfig your iface. ftp the tar.z file down to the b partition of the disk. 6) cd to the place where you have the a partition mounted, and zcat the tar.z | tar xf -. Once that is done the a partition of the disk is now loaded with 386bsd. 7) don't reboot until you fix the host, resolv.conf, and hostname files. 8) shutdown. you should be able to reboot from the hard disk.
