If I had been at least half awake when working with that board, I would have noticed that the cables & connectors supplied by Boca were configured as NULL MODEM cables. Problem solved. It seems that most people have been using Boca 16 boards, which seem to be completely different beasts (and they have more of the 232 control signals) and may actually come with DCE-to-DTE cables.
