As I wrote you earlier, the right rules for the lex/yacc targets are
in the Makefile. You system has some nice but inappropriate defaults.
Try entering this by hand:
[pfeifer@buster:freeWAIS-sf-2.0/ir]{27} rm *_[ly].o
# make sure that you have the original *_[ly].c files from the distribution
[pfeifer@buster:freeWAIS-sf-2.0/ir]{28} touch *_[ly].c
[pfeifer@buster:freeWAIS-sf-2.0/ir]{29} make libwais.a
/usr/bin/cp field_y.h field_y.ht
