Thanks to all the folks who responded.  Here is a good 
synopsis for the solution:

On the "Edit->Preferences->Sessions" page for your session (or 
the
<default> page if you want this to affect all sessions), make 
sure that you
check "Berkeley 4.3 CR mode" and nothing else; also on that 
page, make sure
that the "Interrupt", "Suspend", and "Resume" fields are 
blank.

Note that I don't think these changes affect current sessions, 
only new
sessions started after you make the changes.
