I had a similar problem which turned out to be an extra character at
the end of the file added by ftp.  It might be because of not setting
"image" mode.  Anyway, see if the size on the ftp server matches the
size of the file you have downloaded, and if your downloaded file is
one greater, remove the last byte.  I used emacs for this (ESC > BS).
