It's a pretty steep learning curve, but I'm pulling it all together now. Could any clever bods out there answer any of following... Is FreeBSD reliable enough as a router? And need any more maintennance than a black box ? AND as easy to set up (configuring the serial card and FreeBSD) ? 8-] Right... CYBAR * 10 Nodes (486PCs & Macs) for mail/web/news access. * Shared printer(s). * Pentium with 32Meg RAM (that enough RAM?) email/web/news server & LAN management. * 386sx 8 Meg RAM (THAT enough RAM?? And is a 386sx fast enough?) FreeBSD router. Is 10BaseT with plug'n play ethernet cards OK ? Here is a list of componants quoted for the job... 14 x CAT5 RJ45 twisted pair sockets. 16 port I-Beam Ethernet hub. 16 port punch down distribution panel. 27U 19inch rack mount cabinet (glass). Does this sound good to you ? Would I need anything other than FreeBSD on the server, to manage the network? ANY advice on any of these things would be GRATEFULLY received !! (please email me if you can answer any further questions that WELL up inside my head !!)
